Change is sweet and attractive as long as we are not the ones required to change. This is why not everyone takes to it. Not everyone makes the effort to change. It is intriguing. It spells a stop to what you have been used to, something you have been comfortable with for a while.
We love to see change happen as much as we dislike to change ourlselves.
People do not naturally resist change. People naturally resist being changed.
So many young leaders and entrepreneurs worldwide are talking about their passion for seeing change in the world. And all their dreams and strategies being put into action to help bring about positive change are inspiring to all the people they influence.
Haven’t we at times said that too? I hope to see this kind of change here, and there. The (fill in the blank) needs to change and (fill in the blank).
The only problem is before anything can change around you, there must first be a change inside you. This is the only way truly sustainable change can be achieved. Otherwise, you can only maintain that superficial change for so long. Soon enough it’ll start showing. Like a house of cards, it’ll come crumbling down.
This thought from Mahatma Gandhi sums it up well: “Be the change you want to see in the world .” The distance between where you stand right now and where you want to be is measured by the changes you are willing to make in your life.
Where do you want to be? What is the distance between where you are now and the place you want to be? That distance is measured in units I call “change units.”
How many change units are there between you and your definition of success?
Your attitude towards change will be the difference maker.
Creating positive change begins with a dedication to first change yourself. Positivity will rise from a positive source. Your change prompts this.
According to John C. Maxwell, there are three catalysts for change:
- People change when they are hurt enough that they have to change.
- People change when they learn enough that they want to change.
- People change when they receive enough that they are able to change.
Yet, all these three are choices. They remain subject to our choosing. We make the said choices every single day of our lives. Whatever we do, whichever deed we engage in, our habits, and behaviors all lead to one of these choices.
We’ll either receive enough, learn enough, or hurt enough before we are willing to change. It is a sad truth that most of us will wait till we are hurt enough to desire or even consider changing.
We have a choice today. One we can make right now.
Take Alfred Nobel for example. He was a Swedish chemist who made a fortune by inventing dynamite and other powerful explosives that equipped weapons of mass destruction. They named the Nobel Peace Prize after him. See the irony yet? But that’s only the first chapter of Alfred’s story.
When his brother died, a newspaper mistakenly printed Alfred’s obituary instead. The obituary described the dead man as one who made it possible to kill more people, more quickly than anyone in history. Alfred was shaken after reading this account of his life and devoted the vast majority of his wealth toward efforts that benefit humanity.
What can we learn from Alfred’s story?
- It’s never too late to change.
- Change in the world starts with change in you.
- You can choose to change today.
We love to see change happen as much as we dislike to change ourselves.
Consider these questions:
- What changes do you need to make that you have been unwilling to make?
- What holds you back the most from achieving your personal and professional goals?
- What change do you need to make in yourself that will lead to positive change in the people around you?
