Do you find comfort and satisfaction in who and where you are today? Are you satisfied with yourself?
The fact that complacency closely mimics the nobility of contentment yet completely different from it is troubling and has become the bed on which many have rested. A kind of rest that destroys great futures. Let us get this straight.
Contentment is finding joy and peace in your circumstances while you continue the work you’re called to do. On the other hand, Complacency is deciding you’re going to stay where you are because you’re apathetic toward improving yourself or the world around you. This is limiting at all levels of personal growth.
Complacency has some adverse effects on the growth of the individual making them;
- 1. Love shortcuts – by avoiding anything that remotely spells challenges.
2. Disengaged – detached and uninterested in their advancement and development.
3. Lack passion – therefore they stop taking initiative.
4. Resistant to change – so much so that they are uninterested in other opportunities however good and promising they might be.
5. Stop thinking – they operate like robots showing routine, auto control, and auto-piloted lives without conscious cognition.
6. Stagnant – they become satisfied with the status quo. No risk-taking. Pure unwillingness to pursue anything.
7. Avoid risks – out of fear of failure or rejection. They find comfort in not advancing, and in not trying anything that might expose them to scrutiny of competence.1
Do any of these speak to you or your team? That is evidence that you need to rekindle the growth fire (personal or corporate) within you.
Like a slow-acting pill, complacency slows growth to a halt. Then the same effects continue degrading it further into the negatives. Gradually, like a cancer, it kills every single hope of ever improving. Eventually, not even the individual can recognize themselves. For a company maintaining this steady decline, a cease of existence will be their last call.
Yet, there is a reason to be glad: everyone can achieve something great. It starts by finding the right thing to achieve.
